- This tiny coffee-table book is hilarious. Like many other people, I grew up watching 90s reruns of SNL, and the nonsequitur brilliance of Deep Thoughts has always influenced my sense of humor. This book is exactly what you think it is a lovely little spoof on the self-actualization and self-motivation BS that has always been a staple of any bookstore. It's funny, absurd, and really dark. Huge recommendation, and a great gift for the relative that takes everything just a bit too seriously.
- Sometimes, my eyes well up and my stomach hurts from laughing at some of them. You can read the whole thing in one or two sittings, or just read a few pages from time to time. After a while, it's always worth revisiting them. Most of them are clean, so I read them to my 7 and 9 year old kids too. They laugh really hard at some of them, but it isn't good for bed time because they keep repeating them and laughing while trying to get to sleep.
UPDATE It's been about 2 years and we still quote this thing sometimes whenever some random thing reminds us of it. My kids were just laughing again yesterday when something reminded me of one of these to say. - Fun little diversion. Most or many of these thoughts could have been written on a men̢۪s bathroom wall. I remember when Al Franken delivered these on SNL, and when reading this book, I can hear his nasally voice inflecting these words of wisdom. So, if you want a little trip down memory lane, find a copy and enjoy.
- Jack Handy can dependably make me laugh. The beauty part is, doses of his wit come in super-short word bursts if you don't like one example, move right on to the next. And there are plenty of them in this slender, midget paper-back; fits right into your pocket, like a pack of cigarettes, only these aren't lethal.
- Reminds me of my teens and 20's. One of my favorite parts of SNL back in those days. Bought it for my sis for Christmas and she thought it was one of the best gifts she had gotten - even read a bunch of them aloud to the rest of us. Actually brightened a rough Christmas this year.
- Jack Handey, is always amazing. I have quoted him in my highschool yearbook, facebook profile, twitter, and even a college paper.
Any Jack Handey makes a great book and a great easy read when you need to cheer up or tickle your brain a little.
One of my all time favorite comedy writers, greatly under recognized and under appreciated. - Funny book. This is a good little thing to have on a very small coffee table, or to give to a friend. I purchased it because I had heard it was an excellent book to use as a primer for writing stand-up comedy. Apparantly several comedians out there in the world have used this series of books as a framework for designing stand-up comedy, and silly situations.
I highly agree.
