The Garden Journal Planner and Log Book Repeat successes learn from mistakes with complete personal garden records 28 adaptable yearround forms The Garden Journal Log Books Volume 1 Joy L Kieffer 9780692573983 Books Reviews
- Finally! This is the perfect solution for my garden documentation. I couldn't tell from the page previews, but I took a chance after disappointment with other planners. This has everything I was looking for and more. There are sections for everything- recording weather, plot design, individual plant pages, logs for types of plants, the diary pages, propagation pages, and even formulas pages (I need to know eg how many gallons of water needed to give a 6 ft diameter raised bed one inch of captured rainwater, how many gallons cistern for 2000 sq ft of beds, etc). I worked out charts for permaculture guilds for our location which I will glue into the book. Otherwise all my other notes will be easy to consolidate here. Unlike other planners, this doesn't read like a how to book- it's just lots of really well designed pages for me to record and organize my notes. Bravo! And thanks a million.
March 20th - I used a blow dryer to soften the glue to separate the pages, trimmed the edges, then made holes with 3 hole punch and placed in a big 3 ring binder. Just need a few more pages for logs and individual plant data -- did not know I had so much data accumulated over the past 3 years and to use divider pages for the major sections. I keep all my seed packets in a 4 inch thick binder too, in 4x6 inch photo pages, so I like having another binder solution. - I added some photos of some of the pages. This is a little too much for me. I'm a casual gardener. I was looking for something a little less involved.
- This is a well thought out journal. It has categories for everything you might possibly want to record. I took mine to the printer and for $5 they took it apart and spiral bound it. This makes it much easier to use. The price of this journal was so reasonable that I didn't mind paying the extra to have it bound.
- Just received this garden log and journal. I am so excited. I did what another reviewer suggested and used a hair dryer to remove the glue binding fairly easily. Today I plan to cut just a smidge off the edge with an exacto and punch holes with a 3 hole punch to put all into a cute flowered notebook I got yesterday. Bought tabs at the dollar store to divide into vegies, perennials, annuals, shrubs, etc. I do mostly perennial flowers and will probably have other divisions like sun and shade once I get started. This is just what I've been looking for for years. Sure, there's a few more columns than I may not need but the overall book is scrumptious. I'm going to show my son and daughter-in-laws or may surprise them each with one because it's going to be so handy. I have little scraps of notes and info filed here and there. Can't wait to put it all and even pics and tags in once place! Yippee!
- I was really excited to receive this book with hopes that I would keep me organized. Unfortunately I don't think that I will be able to utilize it like I thought. I am a fairly new gardener and perhaps as the years pass I will see the need to record all of the plants scientific information, dew points and humidity levels, but at this point I was looking for something a bit more simple to log the basics. This would be ideal for someone who loves studying plants and grows a wide variety of them. If you are a simple gardener who grows veggies to feed or supplement your family's produce, I'm certain that an organized spiral notebook will suffice.
- I am taking a Master Gardener class thru the county cooperative extension - - these pages are great for keeping all the information about sources for seeds, plants, dates for planting, pest, weather and many other records I will be so glad I can look back on. Love it.
- We just moved to an acreage this past summer and hope to begin a veggie and fruit garden. I have been searching for a helpful and cute way to track our garden...mostly crop rotation and plant data. This will help for sure!
It is quite feminine/cute too with little plants and flowers drawn on the pages in the margins. I like this, but if you're searching for a more masculine journal or record book for your garden, this might not be it. It's not a hindrance to the effectiveness of the book, just a stylistic trend worth noting.
The other thing I like is the presence of the page categories on the open edge of the book. This helps you quickly find the section you need be it weather log, garden plot, various plant logs, etc..
The author gives permission to take part and copy her pages (as long as you do not mass produce with intent to sell or give away), to truly make your own journal. I will likely do this as I will require more pages than what is available in some sections.
It has a page of the U.S. Agricultural Zone Map, charts and tables with measurement conversions, and it has a page devoting to tree pruning (instructions and images) as well as soil, worm and drainage tests that you can easily do on your own.
There's a lot of space to fill in if you choose to, or you could probably scratch out and rename some sections to meet your needs, but the base level of this book is fantastic! - If I could give this book 10 stars, I would! It is chock full of pages to help you organize your garden details - from planning, to plant purchases, to growing. And there are plenty of each type of page to be useful for a long time. I received it yesterday and last night I was already sketching and planning a new flower bed for this season. I'm also a bit of a book snob and I even love the paper used and the simple graphics. I can tell this will be a useful resource for me for many years. In fact, I am a Master Gardener and I love this book so much, I plan on sharing it with my fellow Master Gardeners at our next meeting.
