  • Great work by Shaw... Life can Bea joke on us with the words from others. Never let it be said life's not mysterious.
  • “The Shewing up of Blanco Posnet” is a one act play that takes place many years back on the western plains of the US. The people of the town, men and women, are very rough. One of the greatest crimes in the area is horse stealing. The words “shewing up” is old English for “showing up.”
The sheriff's horse that he lent to one man, who lent it to another is stolen, and the town captures Blanco Posnet for the theft and intends to hang him, with the town emptying their guns by shooting him as he hangs, just for the delight of it. The problem is that Blanco does not have the horse and will not tell where it is. The only witness, a disreputable woman, claims she saw Blanco with the horse.
Blanco is known to the town and to himself as a bad man. He has a brother who is a reformed drunk and is now the Elder, the religious leader of the town. He wants Blanco to admit the theft and repent.
The play focuses on which of the two brothers is really the righteous man. It also focuses on the people of the town Is the sheriff, for example, doing what is right? Also, the question is raised in the play, why does God allow so much evil and why did God create people since they are so bad?
