A Message to Garcia And Other Essential Writings on Success Elbert Hubbard Charles Conrad Best Success Books 9781442119420 Books Reviews
- An excellent and interesting book I have read many times over the years and have used as a demonstration text for public speaking classes (and so much more.)
- I argue that as a generation as a whole this is one quality we are lacking. We were raised with "why." however not as in "why" out of curiosity or amazement at the world, but "why do I need/have to do that?"
This book is short and sweet and to the point. Don't, however, miss the multitude of messages found in it. Read it, go grab a drink and a snack, come back and read it 2 more times. Attempt to put its message into practice and you'd be amazed at the results. - Hubbard is a good and charismatic writer. Unfortunately his flowery prose (from the perspective of employers) about what he considers the ultimate employee, is in fact urging uncritical thinking and a slave mentality from the perspective of the employee. It is ultimately just sugar coating the bitter pill of the Iron Law of Oligarchy.
If you are one who will deliver the "message to Garcia" without questioning, endangering your welfare or even life, without knowing what the message is, whether it is really important enough to warrant such risk, and without questioning the sender's motives for putting you into harm's way, you may be more worthy of a Darwin Award than an Employee Of The Month Award. - I had never heard of this book. I highly recommend it for 13-19 year old males. Please get this for your son, god son, grandson. They will like it and so will you.
- After I read this book, I ordered several more to give as gifts. An insightful message to all individuals who wonder what the boss wants. Easy to read and understand. No complexity here.
- One of the greatest messages of getting things done. There is a reason I love to read the classics.
- I downloaded this book because it was mentioned in The 16 Laws of Success. Interestingly I was working at a company at the time where my co-worker fit the example made in the book of those who debate every request made to them.
It comes down to efficiency, I think. When a decision is made to do something, just do it. If it works, the job is finished; if it doesn't you know immediately and can move on to the next best solution. But to stand and debate it just wastes everyone's time.
Garcia was a do-er and this short read makes an important point as to how necessary it is to have them in your camp. - This is a very inspiring book. It offers some great advice for how to succeed in the working world perseverance, patience, hope, hard work, and no grumbling. It encourages one to live to the fullest.
I might have a few quibbles about some of the ideas and the overenthusiasm, but the book is quite useful.
